Just as with 35 mm film camera, digital cameras require the correct amount of light to produce quality pictures. Sun light and all the rainbow colors get filtered out as depth increases, so artificial light is always required for bright vivid colors. Some Canon models have extreme 3X to 4X telephoto lens that can be used underwater with dramatic results, but as the subject distance increases so do the lighting requirements. An external adjustable power strobe can provide more depth of field, and a light and shadow effect because is located farther from the lens. A powerful external strobe can also make your colors MUCH brighter and more vivid.
